The participants comprised 51 Special Scouts from Penang Cheshire Home, Penang Cerebral Palsy (Spastics) Children's Association and the School for the Mentally Retarded Children in Jalan Datuk Keramat. Twenty-nine regular Scouts from SMK Jalan Damai, Penang, volunteered their services in helping the Special Scouts carry out the activities. The theme for this year was “We Can” – to let others know that Special Scouts could perform like ordinary people when participating in Scouting activities, such as camping, cooking, and canoeing.
YB Koay Teng Hai, ADUN Pulau Tikus, declared the Agoonoree open after Dato' Seri Khoo Keat Siew, the President of Penang Cheshire Home, welcomed the scouts and guests. Also present was Mdm Khoo Poh Sen, the representative of the Penang State Scout Commissioner.
During the Agoonoree, the participants tried their hands at outdoor activities such as top-spinning, kim’s game, bubble-making, bowling, tug-of-war, badminton, and shooting balls into hoops. Some participants visited a New Zealand War Ship at Swettenham Pier. The canoeing session was the highlight of the day. At night, the participants displayed their creativity by making a bag each.
On the second day, the participants toured the mainland. At the Penang Bird Park, there was intense excitement when they fed the fishes and when the birds pecked the food out of their outstretched hands. They were also mesmerized by the performance during the avian show-time.
After a photo-session with the stars of the bird show, the participants were ushered into the cafeteria to be served with fried rice sponsored by the Lions Club of Bagan. The next stop after the hearty meal was PetroSains Dino Trek Exhibition at AEON Seberang Prai City Shopping Centre, Bandar Perda. Here the participants learned about dinosaurs through the interactive games. The two activities that the participants enjoyed most were matching pictures of bones on a touch screen to form a dinosaur and shooting balls into a dinosaur’s mouth.
Before returning to the Island, the participants stopped by a Paintball arena in Bukit Minyak to try a hand at target-shooting. Here the participants also watched how a paintball competition was held.
That night, there were a barbecue and campfire. The participants joined in the dancing and singing session which was led by the Scouts from SMK Jalan Damai. It was a memorable night for the Special Scouts.
The three days’ camp ended with Mdm. Loh Siew Heoh, the Vice President of Penang Cheshire Home, giving out certificates of attendance to the participants and certificates of appreciation to the volunteers at the closing ceremony.

Hong Kong Centenary Jamboree photos

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mhL5mYdaHBE/TeRPxip8HgI/AAAAAAAAAMo/vXDO-OELtBE/s320/all%2Bdisney.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5612698748145376770" />
Took 4 Special Scouts, Ooi Wan Chean, Ng Yong Nian, Loh En Kai and Ng Phooi Ling, to the Jamboree. This agoonoree was held in Malacca as requested by the participants of the 3rd Penang Cheshire Agoonoree who had enjoyed themselves tremendously in the Cameron Highlands. 40 Special Scouts from Penang Cheshire Home, Penang Cerebral Palsy (Spastics) Children’s Association, and School for the Mentally Retarded accompanied by 40 volunteers and regular Scouts participated in this agoonoree.

Opening Ceremony
The opening ceremony was held at the Penang Cheshire Home. Dato' Seri Khoo Keat Siew, the President of Penang Cheshire Home, welcomed the scouts and guests. The opening ceremony was officiated by YB Koay Teng Hai, ADUN Pulau Tikus. Immediately after the ceremony, the scouts set off by bus for the Lost World of Tambun.

Wednesday, 9 June 2010
They reached their first rest stop at lunchtime. After eating the delicious chicken rice which was sponsored by IPOH RIVERVIEW CLUB BRANCH OF LIONS CLUB OF SUNWAY, they had a fun time at the petting zoo and at the amusement park in the Lost World of Tambun. However, they spent more time at the petting zoo where they touched and fed the animals especially the raccoons. At the amusement park, a number of thrill-seeking scouts tried out the “Dragon Flight”, a swing-chair ride. They were rewarded with a spectacular aerial view of the park as they spun around! Others, who were tired out, took the “Adventure Express”, the Lost World Train that took them on a journey past majestic ruins, surging water and wild tigers. At the hot spring, the scouts had a feel of the rather high earth temperatures while sitting beside the pool and splashing water playfully at each other as they were not allowed to take a dip in the natural spring-fed pool for safety reasons.

After an exciting experience at the Lost World of Tambun, they continued their journey to the Spastics Children Association of Selangor & Federal Territory where they spent the night.

Thursday, 10 June 2010
The tallest twin buildings in the world, the Petronas Twin Towers, awaited their arrival. They had the time of their lives in Aquaria observing the aquatic animal exhibits. They also had the opportunity to touch some of the marine life. After lunch, they journeyed on to the historic town of Malacca. Dinner was at SMK Methodhist (ACS). After dinner, the scouts were special guests at a campfire conducted by the Malaccan Scouts of SMK Methodhist. A representative from the Penang Special Scouts Contingent was given the honour of torching the cauldron to signal the start of the campfire. From the cauldron a flaming ball of fire bounced down a strip of bamboo, onto a pile of wood and ignited it with a loud whoosh.

Friday, 11 June 2010
The day was spent in the UNESCO World Heritage Town of Malacca. The first activity was a 45 minutes boat ride down the Malacca River. Motor launches ferried the scouts past old villages and modern day buildings. Next the scouts were thrilled by a ride in the glass cabin of the Taming Sari Tower, the first and only gyro tower in Malaysia. The glass cabin revolved as it rose to the top of the tower. During the 7 minutes ride, the scouts were rewarded with a panoramic view of Malacca Town. At the top, they became visibly excited when they could recognize the Malacca River which they had encountered earlier in the day.
The next stop was The Royal Malaysian Navy Museum (Muzium TLDM). The scouts checked out the exhibits which included photographs of admirals, medals of honour, various ranks in the naval command, the naval uniforms, naval weapons and communications equipment. The scouts were mesmerized by the helicopter in the museum and lots of photos were taken. The next segment of the tour was “free and easy” whereupon the scouts could choose to shop at Dataran Pahlawan Megamall or to visit the nearby popular tourist icons such as A’ Famosa and The Stadthuys. When night fell, they went for a stroll down Jonker Street, well-known for its heritage buildings, antiques and local delicacies. As it was their final night in Malacca, the scouts spent their money freely, savouring the delicious food and purchasing lots of souvenirs to take home.

Saturday, 12th June 2010
Breakfast was followed by a short closing ceremony where certificates were given out to the scouts and a souvenir was presented to a generous donor from Malacca.

Acknowledgement
We would like to thank our sponsors and all the volunteers especially the Scouts from SMK Jalan Damai for their assistance in making this Agoonoree a success.

5th Penang Cheshire Agoonoree 2010

The 5th Penang Cheshire Agoonoree will be held from 9-12 June 2010. The participants comprised 27 Special Scouts from Penang Cheshire Home and Penang Cerebral Palsy (Spastics) Children's Association. 33 regular Scouts from SMK Jalan Damai, Penang and 2 Rovers from Perlis volunteered their services and made this carnival a success.

Opening Ceremony

Dato' Seri Khoo Keat Siew, the President of Penang Cheshire Home, welcomed the scouts and guests. YB Koay Teng Hai, ADUN Pulau Tikus, then declared the Agoonoree open. Also present was Mr. Neoh Dian Bin, the representative of the Penang State Scout Commissioner.

Day 1

It was a fun day at the campsite. The day began with the participants sawing up lengths of bamboo for constructing a fence. After that they tied up the pieces of bamboo to build the fence with help and guidance from the volunteer scouts.

The main activity for the day was canoeing .Each year the participants looked forward to this activity with eagerness and anticipation. In their view-point, canoeing was an Xtreme sport, a challenge. The participants were wheeled down the beach to the canoes. The helpers then seated them comfortably in the cockpits. The volunteer scouts paddled the canoes around the bay. The participants were elated as the canoes sliced through the water and the breeze blew in their faces.

The venue which was by the sea proved to be the perfect place for the kite-flying activity. With some help and coaching from the helpers, the participants had the experience of flying the beautifully coloured kites. The steady sea breeze aided in lifting and keeping the kites in the air.

The top spinning competition saw the participants try to get their tops to spin for as long as possible. The Scouts of Japan presented these tops to us during the 10th Nippon Agoonoree in 2008.

A “country fair” gaiety was added to the gathering when several participants let off rainbow-hued soap bubbles which were carried aloft by the breeze. Some of them even managed to produce bubbles that were as big as coconuts!

At the make-shift mini bowling alley, the eager participants exerted so much strength that a few of the balls were broken. These were then replaced.

Wheelchair netball was also played. Each player sat either on a chair or a wheelchair arranged in a row. Each team was given a ball which was held by the player at the centre of the line. When the whistle was blown, the ball was passed from one player to another. The team whose ball entered the net first scored a point.

Outdoor cooking proved to be a perennial favourite. Each participant had to cook an egg using a mess can over a fuel tablet fire. One of the participants was so eager to eat his “master piece” that he was seen eating the egg even before it had been properly peeled. The participants seemed to relish their own cooking even though there was no pepper or sauce to go with the eggs. A few enthusiastic participants tried their hand at cooking rice in bamboo.

Day 2

This was an outing day. We spent the morning at Penang Turf Club National Horse Show 2009. Those participants who were wheelchair bound were given the opportunity to take a ride in the horse carriage while those who could walk rode the ponies. We did not have to pay for these rides as they were sponsored by Penang Turf Club. The participants also enjoyed the equestrian and other shows. Then we proceeded to Penang Cheshire Home for lunch.

After lunch we went for a trishaw ride along the George Town Heritage Trail. During the ride we stopped at Khoo Kongsi, Cheah Kongsi and Fort Cornwallis.

At 4.00 p.m. we were scheduled to have a paintball shootout but the event organizer met with an accident on the highway just before coming to our campsite. So instead of paintball, our committee members let the participants do some target-shooting using wooden guns.

It was campfire time at night. The participants had a great time dancing and being entertained by the regular Scouts.

Day 3

During the art and craft session the participants coloured the hearts given to them and made brooches out of them. Others enjoyed the luxury of soaking themselves in the sea as this was a golden opportunity for them to do so.

The closing ceremony was officiated by the Vice-President of Penang Cheshire Home, Datin Seri Daisy Yeow

Conclusion

It had been a wonderful and nostalgic experience for the participants. However, some of them enquired as to why this year’s agoonoree was not held in Melaka as proposed earlier. The explanation given was that it was not feasible from the physical and financial aspects to acquire the proper accommodation. It was hoped that a generous sponsor could come forward to help out. Let us explore all avenues to realize their dream.

Acknowledgement

We would like to thank our sponsors, The Penang State Government, Leisure Dynamics Bhd., Unibrite Bhd., Mr. Teoh Peng Hee and Madam Yii Yeang Ping for helping to finance this agoonoree and to all the volunteers especially the Scouts from SMK Jalan Damai for their assistance in making this Agoonoree a success. We also would like to thank the Persekutuan Pengakap Malaysia for their help and guidance especially in allowing our Scouters to attend international Agoonorees and seminars to widen their knowledge in organizing an agoonoree.

Report by
Veronica Pau
<img width='1'
The Special Scouts Carnival was held on <st1:date year="2008" day="28" month="12" st="on">28th December 2008</st1:date>, at The Penang Water Sports Centre, Tanjung Bungah.. This Special Scouts Carnival was initiated because the participants of the 3rd Penang Cheshire Agoonoree which had been held in the Cameron Highlands enjoyed themselves so tremendously that they requested for another activity to be held for them before the end of the year. The participants requested the Organizing Committee to take them canoeing as was done in the first two Agoonorees (Jamborees for Disabled Scouts). Thus, it was decided that since Malaysian Scouts were celebrating the 100th Year of Scouting in Malaysia in 2008, it would be opportune for us if we could organize a special outing to make this a memorable year for the Special Scouts (Disabled Scouts and also known as Challenged Scouts). The participants comprised 36 Special Scouts from Penang Cheshire Home and Penang Cerebral Palsy (Spastics) Children’s Association. This event was sponsored by MSIG. They later said that they had been thrilled by the sea breeze blowing against their faces and the steady movement of the canoes ploughing through the waves. One must appreciate that, for them, this is high adventure. And the sight of the satisfied smiles on their faces as they disembarked was very touching to any observer.

Paintball

The paintball activity was conducted by Jin and his family from Promedia Paintball. The scouts had the chance to shoot a target which was about 4 metres away. They were very engrossed in the activity and serious about hitting the target each time. It had been great fun.

Ham Radio

“Hello…this is Special Scout calling Headquarters”, The Special Scouts had the opportunity to use the Ham Radio. A briefing was conducted by Mr K.B.Khoo (popularly known as “Kampung Boy” among his Ham Radio fraternity) who explained the difference between the handphone and Ham Radio. After the explanation each scout got to talk with a friend over the Radio. Two sets of toys were presented to the scouts as a momento of the activity.

Flower Arrangement

This activity was conducted with the view of enabling the scouts to learn a new skill which might turn out to be useful in the future as a source for generating income. A florist taught them how to arrange a bouquet of flowers. A competition was subsequently held and the top three winners were Sophia, Phei San and Phooi Ling.

Fire Fighting

This activity was included to give the Special Scouts an opportunity to learn to use fire extinguishers so that, in case of fire, they would know what to do. The Fire Brigade from the Bagan Jermal Fire Station showed the Special Scouts how to use the CO2 and the dry powder fire extinguishers. After that the scouts had the opportunity of putting off a fire.

Station Games

The Station Games were conducted by the BM High School Scouts. At the third stop, they had to hit bottles with a coconut and then throw a hoop over a skittle. At the end of the course, they had to shoot a target using a catapult.

Scout Logo (Finger Printing)

This activity was carried out to commemorate the Centenary of Scouting in Malaysia. It was consequently held at our “Scout Village” in the Cameron Highlands. For the first time, venturing out of Penang State, 41 Special Scouts from Penang Cheshire Home, Penang Cerebral Palsy (Spastic) Children’s Association, Penang Handicapped Children’s Centre and Sekolah Pendidikan Khas Alma, accompanied by 59 volunteers and regular Scouts, participated in this agoonoree.

Opening Ceremony
The opening ceremony was held at Penang Cheshire Home. It was officiated by Penang Municipal Councillor, Mr Tan Hun Wooi, who represented Penang State Health, Welfare and Caring Society committee Chairman YB Phee Boon Poh. The representative of the Penang State Commissioner, Mr Heng Soo Peng, was also present.

The Journey to Cameron Highlands
On the way to Cameron Highlands, the participants visited Taiping Zoo where they spent two hours watching the animals. At the beginning, a mini passenger train was passing us when all of a sudden a fearful scream was heard at the front of the train and the train immediately stopped. The volunteers who were walking behind rushed to the front to see what had happened. A member of the public was grazed by the train. Luckily for him, other than being badly shaken, he suffered no injury. From then on, the volunteers were extra careful, ensuring that the wheelchairs stopped by the side whenever a train passed by. After visiting the zoo, every one had lunch at the scenic Lake Gardens, feasting on finger-licking fried chicken sponsored by KFC.

Places Visited at Cameron Highlands

Cactus Point, Brinchang
At Cactus Point, our group of participants and volunteers enjoyed looking at the beautiful flowers and cacti which were on sale. Some were seen proudly wearing their work of art. The scouts also coloured the masks given to them. Next, they drew posters, appropriately based on the theme, “Celebrating 100 Years of Scouting in Malaysia”.

Games
The participants played chess, checkers, snakes and ladders, stacking games, completing pictures, bow and arrow, balloon bursting, floating balloons and badminton.

Campfire
A campfire was held on the second night. A representative from each patrol torched an airplane (made of wood) at the start of the campfire. After being torched the burning airplane flew to a pile of wood and ignited it. This was followed by singing, folk dancing and sketches.

Closing Ceremony
The agoonoree was officially closed by Mr Cheah Phee Guan, the Treasurer of Penang Cheshire Home. Then we stopped at the Cameron Bharat Tea Plantation, Kuala Terla. Here all the participants and volunteers were treated by the management to freshly brewed “teh tarik”. It tasted very nice and was different from what we had at home. Seeing us enjoy our drink, the manager allowed us to refill to our hearts’ content. Our last stop was Bukit Gantang where we had our lunch.

19th – 21st August 2007

Background

The 2nd Penang Cheshire Agoonoree was initiated because the participants of the 1st Penang Cheshire Agoonoree enjoyed themselves tremendously and they had requested that another Agoonoree be held for them. The Organizing Committee took up the challenge made by the Guest-of-honour Dato’ Dr Teng Hock Nan, during the opening ceremony of the 1st Penang Cheshire Agoonoree to extend the invitation of the Agoonoree to all Special Scouts in the Northern Region of Peninsular Malaysia.

The Committee agreed to organize another Agoonoree this year in conjunction with the Centenary of World Scouting and the Golden Jubilee of our Nation’s Independence. Consequently, the committee strived to make this Agoonoree a unique one so that it would be a memorable milestone for our Special Scouts, for example by including a trishaw tour along the Heritage Trail; of George Town.

Seventy-two Special Scouts participated in the Agoonoree. The participants had different disabilities. The majority were suffering from celebral palsy, while some were visually impaired and others had hearing impairment.

Daily report

Day 1
The opening ceremony was held at 11.30 am after registration of the participants. It was officiated by YB Quah Kooi Heong, who represented the Penang Chief Minister. After the opening ceremony, all the guests were taken for a tour around the campsite. The Chief Scout Commissioner of Malaysia, Col. Prof. Dato’ Dr. Kamarudin Kachar was also present.

After lunch, the participants were taken for a visit to the Butterfly Farm. There the participants were given the opportunity to touch the various insects and reptiles. They were also shown a 6 minute film on the life of different insects. On the way out, some of the participants bought souvenirs as a remembrance of their trip.

At 4.00 p.m. the participants proceeded to George Town, the Heritage City of Penang, to admire the beautiful eclectic architecture of the city. The bus stopped at Kampung Kolam where 50 trishaws waited to take the participants on an exciting tour. Penang, where multi ethnic communities live together in harmony, is a place where tourists can find 4 major religious places of worship along a road that spans about 1 km. This road is the famed Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling, where one can find a mosque, a Hindu temple, a Chinese temple and a church. Thus this road was a must for our participants to visit. The first place the trishaws passed by was the Yap Clanhouse. Then they passed by “Kapitan Keling Mosque”, the largest historic mosque in town built in 1801. Then on the right hand side of the road, about about 50 meters after the mosque, the participants could see the Mahamariamman Temple, which is the oldest Hindu temple in town which dates back to 1833. Just about 80 meters after the Hindu temple, the participants could see the Goddess of Mercy temple which was founded around 1800 on their left. Then just two blocks away, the participants could see the oldest Anglican Church in the country which dates from 1818.

Then they passed by the Penang State Museum, Cathedral of the Assumption which is a Roman Catholic church which started service in 1861, Saint Xavier’s Institution which is the oldest Roman Catholic school for boys founded by the La Sallean Brothers in 1852 and the Saint Francis Xavier Church founded in 1867. Before going back to the pick up point for the buses, the participants were taken on a ride around KOMTAR, the tallest and most prominent contemporary building in Penang. While they were going round KOMTAR, they passed by the Ong Clan House. Then they proceeded to Carnavon Street which the Chinese refer to as “Khun Choi Kai” because here one can find lots of funeral parlours, besides having the book shops and shops selling praying paraphernalia.
As the participants were tired and it was raining heavily back at the camp in the afternoon, only one activity was conducted after the tour. Because this camp was held in conjunction with the 50th Anniversary of our country’s independence, the participants were asked to draw a picture each to mirror their patriotism.

Day 2
It was a beautiful morning although the sky was dark, but luckily the sea was not rough. We had water activities. The participants had a chance to enjoy a ride in the canoes. Some even had the chance of taking a ride in the rescue boat. Halfway through the journey to a floating platform in the sea, the boat’s motor was switched off so that the participants had the opportunity to paddle the boat using only their hands.

Some of the participants requested for permission to play in the water. As a precaution, they were instructed to wear life jackets if they wanted to have a swim by the shore. The first-timers were so thrilled by the experience that they asked to extend the duration.

Besides canoeing, the participants built sandcastles. They enjoyed watching the water rise to their sandcastle through a trench from their sandcastles to the sea. A fishing competition was also held for the cub scouts. They had to fish out the toy fishes put in a pond, which was a big hole filled with sea water. They enjoyed this activity tremendously and they found it challenging as the fishes could move about propelled by their mechanical tails.

In the afternoon, 12 activities were conducted simultaneously. As the participants had different abilities, they were each given an activity sheet where they could complete the activities at their own pace. The activities were making a mask, making different shapes from balloons, making soap bubbles, making a bracelet, origami, traditional games, darts, launch ball, badminton, stacking game, shooting arrows and backwoodsman cooking.

At night, it was campfire time. Chai Poh Hin, a participant from Penang Cheshire Home who attended the 25th APR Jamboree in Thailand made a grand entrance. He was carried in a sedan chair into the campfire circle by six Scouts to officiate the campfire. It was a sight to be remembered, as most of the participants had never seen a sedan chair made of bamboo. After the campfire, the other participants sat on the sedan chair and were carried around to the cheers of their comrades.

Day 3
The participants lent a helping hand in clearing the campsite. Then they proceeded to the Bridge Building activity. They were required to construct a bridge using 18 pieces of plank.

The closing ceremony was officiated by Mr Cheah Phee Guan representing the Vice Chairman of Penang Cheshire Home.

Conclusion

The participants enjoyed themselves very much. Thanks to the generous sponsorship of the State Government, various organizations and individuals. This Agoonoree could not have been held without the support of the volunteers who toiled day and night to ensure the safety of the participants and guiding them through the activities. Special thanks go to the Scouts from SMK Jalan Damai, SMK Tun Hussein Onn, SMK Simpang Empat and SMK Chung Ling Butterworth for dedicating their time and effort in ensuring the success of another memorable Agoonoree.

The Agoonoree would have achieved greater success if the venue had been more disabled friendly such as having toilets for the disabled.

We wish to put on record that the participants were very grateful to all the sponsors and helpers for making it a memorable experience for them. Many grateful participants were so happy that they could take a ride in a trishaw that they insisted that we convey their thanks to the sponsors for sponsoring the trip. The participants had had a great time and had asked when the next one would be held.

It is hoped that next year more sponsors will come forward so that we can invite more participants to join us in the 3rd Penang Cheshire Agoonoree. The special scouts were Nur Hazlizah bte Abdullah and Vadivelan a/l Ratna Kumar while the leaders were Salinder Vathi Mohan Dass and Veronica Pau Mei Ling.

Youth with special needs and their leaders from the various countries were able to share three days of camping and outdoor experiences. The activities were divided into two categories: on-site and off-site. The on-site activities included ATV, Dolhareubang necklace-crafting, block ground, soap bubble-making, straw rope-making, survival shooting (paintball) game, textile printing, wood bug crafting, Leonardo da Vinci bridge-building, cotton candy-making. The off-site activities included visits to Hallim Park, Carved Stone Park, Geumneung Beach, Jeju Folklore & Natural Museum, Samsunghyeol, Gwandeokjeong and Mysterious Road.

Daily Report

24th May 2007
Today was a rainy day. At 8.00pm everyone was assembled at the Complex Hall for the opening Ceremony by Mr. Bu Duo, the Camp Chief. The evening began with a band display. Then the deaf and dumb scouts ‘sang’ a song. This was followed by speeches, and Korean Drums and Taekwondo performances.

25th May 2007
The Malaysians and the Japanese were in the same subcamp, the Yongnuni Oreum Subcamp. After breakfast, while waiting for our Korean guide, Ms Jenny, to guide us through our activities, we exchanged souvenirs with our Japanese friends. Our first activity was textile printing. The purpose of this activity was to enable the participants to learn the basic concepts and principles of textile printing. Here we were introduced to silk screen printing where the Scouts had a chance to dye Agoonoree participation patches to remember their participation.

The second activity was a survival shooting game. Here we were given paint ball guns to shoot at the targets. This activity is top on the list of the favourite activities. The purpose of this activity was to cultivate self-control and to teach the participants the survival game’s (paint ball) safety rules.

We then proceeded to our next activity which was cotton candy-making. This activity enabled the participants to experience the cotton candy-making process and to taste the cotton candy made by themselves. It was a delicious snack in between activities.

Next we proceeded to wood bug-crafting. Here we were given pieces of wood and beads with which we were to make a bug or animal to be stuck on to a board.

The next activity was a challenging one as we were asked to build a bridge with pieces of wood measuring 7cm X 45 cm. Though we were supposed to construct the bridge in pairs instead of as a team of fives (the APR officer joined us), we had a difficult time at the start of the construction, as our bridge seemed to fall to pieces. Thanks to the clues given by a rover scout on duty, we managed to complete our bridge. This was a good teambuilding activity, as we had to discuss, plan and implement the strategies. After such a challenging task, we had our lunch.

Then it was fun time again. Time for soap bubble-making! This activity enhanced the imagination and thinking power of the participants. During the activity they had to be patient and confident to be able to experience and appreciate the various shapes formed during the soap bubble-making process.

Now it was time to make a necklace, the Dolhareubang Necklace. Dolhareubang or Grandfather Stone is one of the best-known symbols of Jeju Island. First we glued the eyes to the Dolhareubang idol. Then we tied a string and painted the Scout logo on the Dolhareubang.
Next, it was the block ground activity. The purpose of this activity was to develop teamwork and originality through making a sculpture using wood blocks measuring 8 X 2 X 2 cm within a given period of time.

After building a tower, we were given the opportunity to experience riding the All Terrain Vehicle (ATV). We were told the various rules to guarantee safe operation of the ATV before we were allowed on the racetrack.

After racing, we proceeded to the straw rope-making station. Here the participants had a hands-on session on making a straw rope. Before making the rope, the participants were shown pictures of Choga, the traditional Jeju Thatched houses. We were told Jeju people used straw for the roof and fastened the roof with straw ropes much like a net. In that way, even today’s Jeju traditional straw-roof houses have a distinctly beautiful oval shape. The streamlined roof was designed to withstand the strong winds. After making the rope, the participants had fun jumping using the rope they had made.

After our last activity, we took a break before attending the Troop Friendship Gathering at the Complex Hall. Here we were entertained with various performances by the participants.

26th May 2007
Today, we were blessed with a fine weather. Today we would be visiting various Jeju tourist attractions. First we visited Jeju Mysterious Road to experience the phenomenon of driving uphill with the engine off. The road is called "Mysterious Road" because when you put your car in neutral or when you switch off the engine and release the handbrake, the car will appear to cruise uphill rather than down. The stretch for this optical illusion is about 300 m in length. We were told that it was first discovered in 1980 by a taxi driver who was giving a driving tour to a newlywed couple. There are two such roads in Jeju, one on each side of the mountain.

Our next stop was Samseonghyeol. It is known as the place where three demi-gods who founded Tamna Kingdom emerged from the three holes in the ground at this spot. This is where Jeju people originated and it has been worshipped as the birth place of the saints, the founders of Tamra, since prehistoric times. According to the old records, the three demi-gods lived by hunting and they married the three princesses from Byeongnangguk of the East Sea. The princesses brought with them a calf, a pony, and five kinds of seeds so that they could establish a stock-farming country and become prosperous. Sacrificial rites "Chunchudaeje" and "Geonsidaeje" are held on the 10th of April, October, and December every year.

Then we visited the Jeju Folklore & NaturalHistory Museum. This museum is dubbed as the island within the island, as the whole island can be visualised through the museum's exhibitions of folklore relics and indigenous plants and animals. This museum has collected all the folklore, fauna and flora of Jeju. The Natural History Exhibit Hall is composed of 6 exhibition rooms for rocks, marine animals, plants, insects, birds and mammals. The Folklore Exhibition is divided into three different sections: Housing, Clothing and Everyday Life.

We were brought back to the time of Joseon Dynasty at Gwandeokjeong. The meaning of "Gwandeok" is derived from the military art of archery. It is the oldest building in Jeju. It was built during the reign of King Sejong of Joseon Dynasty and was used for public meetings called by the Moksa (county magistrate) to discuss matters with the people or to hold large banquets. It is a pavilion styled building with no doors or walls. The stone statue standing in front of Gwandeokjeong is one of the original Dolhareubangs. We were lucky as during our visit, we witnessed the traditional tea ceremony. It was held as a traditional tea ceremony competition. Here we also experienced the different types of punishments and games of that era.

Next we visited Hallim Park. It is a park with several exotic botanical gardens and caves. The total area of over 27,000 m2 is divided into 16 sectors. As time did not permit, we only visited the Palm Tree Road, Jae-Am Folk Village, Garden With Beatiful Birds, Water Garden and Subtropical Botanic Garden.

After admiring the beautiful landscape, it was time to visit the Geumneung Beach. This beach is packed with lava rocks and strewn with seaweed. From the beach, we could see an island which was formed one thousand years ago from the lava of a volcanic eruption.

Our last stop was the Carved Stone Park. The traditional Dolhareubangs replicas made here are presented to famous Korean and foreign guests who visit Jeju Island. Many other pieces sculpted from the indigenous black basalt are displayed including a figure of a mother rocking her baby with a Mulheobeok (water basket) strung over her shoulders.

The closing ceremony was held.at the Complex Hall at 8.00 p.m. by Mr. Choi Jongkyu, Chief Commissioner of Korea Scout Association. The night started with dances and other performances. Then it was the presentation of souvenirs to the representatives of the various countries. After that we left the hall to witness a Korean traditional dance followed by a fireworks display. Then it was party time where everyone danced to their hearts content and photo-taking session..

27th May 2007
After breakfast, we were taken to the Scout Shop before sending the Hong Kong participants to the airport. Then we were taken to E-mart, to do some shopping and to have our lunch. After sending the participants from Taiwan to the airport, we proceeded to the hotel where we spent our final night in Jeju.

Conclusion
We have gained a lot of knowledge by attending the agoonoree. We have learnt that scouts with different disabilities can come together to attend a camp specially organized for them. We should make them feel that they are not marginalised and discriminated against, as is usual in most communities, but that they are accepted and treated as our own brothers and sisters.

As a follow-up, we shall be implementing some of the ideas and techniques at the 2nd Penang Cheshire Agoonoree which we will hold at Penang Water Sports Centre from 19th to 21st August 2007. This will be a Special Scouts dual celebration of 100 years of World Scouting and 50 years of Merdeka.

A report from a special scout who attended the 11th Malaysian Jamboree

Pengenalan

Background

The 1st Penang Cheshire Agoonoree was initiated because there was a need for activities for the special scouts. This need arose because the two special scouts who attended the 25th Asia Pacific Regional Scout Jamboree in Sattahip, Thailand in December 2005 were enthusiastic in participating in more scouting activities. The Penang State Scout Association held a Special Scout Rally in 2005 and 2006 consecutively. But, this year this Special Scout Rally was not held. As the special scouts were not invited to any regular scout activities, they have suggested that an activity be organised for them.

When the administrator of the Penang Cheshire Home got to know that I was going to attend the Workshop on Working with Youth with Special Needs which was held in Australia, she approached me to conduct an activity for the scouts in the Home.

A date was set to hold a camp for the special scouts. As financial support was needed, the Home approached the Lions Club of Georgetown City which agreed to sponsor the camp. After coming back from the APR workshop, I was confident in organising a camp for special scouts. Thus, I felt that other special scouts should also be given the chance to participate. We then approached their Member of Parliment, YB Dato’ Seri Chia Kwang Chye for financial aid, which he approved. Thus, an invitation to participate in the camp was extended to Penang Spastics Children Center.

Such a camp would need a lot of manpower. In Australia, in the Agoonoree, the organisers would have a ratio of 2 scouts to a special scout. Thus it was planned that we would have 40 scouts to 20 special scouts. The scouts from SMK Jalan Damai and SMK St Marks agreed to participate in the camp. About a week before the camp, it was found that the number of special scouts who wanted to attend the camp increased tremendously to 41 as everyone became very excited. Thus, extra help was needed, and SMK Jalan Damai and SMK St Marks agreed to send the Senior scouts to be helpers while SMK St Xavier sent their Rovers.

The camp would not have been a success without the help of veteran Scouters like Mr. Toh Kheng Jin, Mr. John Chin, Mr. John Lim, Mr. Khoo Yeoh Gan Hong, Mr. Ong Jin Leong, and Tn Haji Jauhar who gave valuable advice to ensure that the camp went on smoothly.

Events and Activities

Day 1

The day started with setting up camp. The scouts constructed part of the gadgets while the special scouts had a hand on tying the rest. They found the activity challenging but enjoyable. After completing the task, the special scouts wrote their names on the bamboo where they had their hands on.

The second activity was the flying fox. At first only a few special scouts dared to volunteer. After a go at it, they found it interesting and the rest were motivated to try after seeing that safety precautions were taken.

Those who had tried the flying fox then went to the next activity which was canoeing. The special scouts sat in the front seats of the canoes. Some requested to have a second chance at it and of course we obliged as the opportunity did not come often.

The beautiful sea was tempting to the special scouts especially a nine year old boy. As a precaution, four scouts were assigned to every special scout who wanted to have a dip in the water.

The fourth activity was the backwoodsman cooking. Here, the participants cooked their food without using the usual utensils. They cooked rice in bamboo, eggs, twist, maize, and potatoes which were part of their snacks for tea.

While waiting for the opening ceremony, the participants sang songs and listened to jokes and stories. The opening ceremony was held at <st1:time hour="17" minute="0" st="on">five o’clock</st1:time>. It was officiated by YB Dato’ Dr Teng Hock Nan who was our State Assemblyman. YB Dato Seri Chia Kwang Chye, our Member of Parliament was also present. After the opening ceremony, all the guests were taken for a tour around the campsite.

The next activity was the campfire. The participants enjoyed themselves especially during the round songs and their favourite was “Loy Kratong”. (“ Loy Kratong” is a Thai festival celebrated during the full moon day in November. This festival is also celebrated in a grand scale in Penang.)

After the campfire, it was time for barbeque. That was the last activity for day 1.

 Day 2

The day started with inspection and tidying up the campsite. Then we had station games where the participants had fun playing the various games. The closing ceremony was officiated by Datin Seri Daisy Yeow, the Vice-President of Penang Cheshire Home.

 Conclusion

The participants enjoyed themselves tremendously and they have requested that another Agoonoree be held for them next year, as suggested by the Guest-of-honour during the opening ceremony to extend the invitation to the Agoonoree to all Special Scouts in the Northern Region of Peninsular Malaysia.

From the feedback received, the committee agreed to organize another Agoonoree next year in conjunction with the Centenary of World Scouting. Some Scout Leaders have readily volunteered to help in the next Agoonoree.

We will strive to make the next Agoonoree a grand one so that it will be a memorable milestone for our Special Scouts as they too celebrate the Centenary of World Scouting.
 "Scouting For A Better World"

Welcome to the blog for Scouts with Special Needs of Malaysia

Hie and welcome. Being a scouter who has brought 2 special scouts to the 25th Asia Pacific Regional Jamboree, I was glad to be given the chance to get a hands-on experience of what the people with special needs have to go through. This has made me realize how lucky we are and how much those with special needs have missed out in life, especially in the joy of Scouting.

I was overwhelmed when Andrew Dufficy, who is a special scout, was given the Queens Scout Award at the age of 17, in 1983 as I have never encountered a King Scout who is a special scout. Achieving the King Scout Award seems to be a tough task even for the regular scouts. Thus, I would like to share the information I brought back regarding current approaches and strategies suitable for including people with special needs and disabilities in Scouting.

People with special needs are regularly sidelined and marginalized, being a minority.
Let the winds of change blow and let us become more sensitive and caring towards the handicapped.
